The Old Rich Man, the Young Man and the Apples…..

A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money.

The old guy fingered his expensive wool vest and said, "Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel."

"I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents."

"The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $9.80."

"After that," the old rich man continued, "I invested the $9.80 into a market stall so I could polish and display a lot more apples. I began making about $50 a month from then on."

"Then my wife's father died and left us Two million dollars."

When we die, our money remains in the bank. Yet, when we are alive, we don’t have enough money to spend.  In reality, when we are gone, there is still a lot of money not spent.

One business tycoon in china passed away.  His widow, was left with 1.9 billion in the bank, and she married his chauffeur.  His chauffeur said, “All the while, I thought I was working for my boss…. It is only now, that I realize that my boss was all the time, working for me”.

The cruel reality is: “It is more important to live longer than to have more wealth”.  So, we must strive to have a strong and healthy body.  It really doesn’t matter who is working for who. 

In a high end hand phone, 70% of the functions are useless. 

For an expensive car, 70% of the speed and gadgets are not needed. 

If you own a luxurious villa or mansion, 70% of the space is usually not used or occupied. 

How about your wardrobes of clothes?  70% of them are not worn! 

A whole life of work and earning 70% of which is for other people to spend. 

So, we must protect and make full use of our 30%.

Go for medical check-ups even if not sick.

Drink more water, even if not thirsty.

Learn to let go, even if faced with grave problems.

Remain humble, even if you are very rich and powerful.

Learn to be contented, even if you are not rich.

Exercise you mind and body, even if you are very busy.

Make time for people you care about.

EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS

Back in the days when Germany was divided, a huge wall separated East and West Berlin.  One day, some people in East Berlin took a truck load of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side.

The people of West Berlin could have done the same thing, but they didn't. Instead they took a truck load of canned goods, bread, milk and other provisions, and neatly stacked it on the East Berlin side.

On top of this stack they placed the sign:  “EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS"

How very true! You can only give what you have.  What do we have inside of us? Is it hate or love? Violence or peace? Death or life? Capacity to build or capacity to destroy?

What have we acquired over the years?  "EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS"

Think about it! Let us give out the good in us.

Russi Modi, Chairman, Tata Steel, was holding a weekly meeting with Tata Steel staff at a football ground in Jamshedpur.

A worker took up a niggling issue. He said the Quality and hygiene of toilets for workers was very bad. Whereas, he pointed out that the cleanliness and hygiene of Executive toilets are always very good.

Russi asked his top executive how much time he needs to set it right.

The executive asked for a month to set it right. Russi said "I would rather do it in a day. Send me a carpenter."

Next day, when the carpenter came, he ordered the sign boards to be swapped.

The sign board on the "workers" toilet was changed to "Executives" and Executive toilet to "Workers".

Russi then gave instructions to inter-change it every fortnight!  The quality of both toilets became on par in 3 days’ time.  A solution that was immediate and lasting for both!

Debriefing of this Story, As a leader, it's your job to listen to the problem patiently but implement the solution quickly.  Always keep finding new ways to solve the problem quickly.

The moment you get this mind-set, your path is transformed from normal leadership to a great leadership.

Sometimes you are unsatisfied with your life, while many people in this world are dreaming of living your life.  A child on a farm sees a plane fly overhead and dreams of flying.  But, a pilot on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of returning home.  That’s life!!!
